What brand of gouache do y'all like best? I haven't tried it yet and I'm not sure which ones to buy. What colors did you buy when you started out?

Maybe not the answer of a super-experienced calligrapher as you hoped for … I also just started using gouache and I have not yet worked out how to use this in a really satisfying way. I bought Schmincke Calligraphy Gouache in Goldpearl and White. This is one of the most expensive brands, but I thought if this wasn't going to work I wanted to be sure that I had bought good material and that it's me, and not to be blamed on the colours. The Gold works wonderfully, its covering and nicely flowing with just a little water, I have no problems with these nasty ink blots etc. The White (as I mentioned in another thread) is much more difficult. I can't get this right – it is too runny or too viscous, it blots or doesn't flow at all, or it gets too transparent. I just can't get this to the right consistency. I also tried it with added gum arabic in different amounts.

It is possible that it is just the White, because I remember that I read somewhere that white pigments can't be grinded superfine else they loose their opacity. I also haven't found any other really good White. Just ordered the Dr. Martins Bleedproof, maybe that will be working better …

I've just been using the cheapest stuff they had at the local art supply store (Michael's) and it has worked fine so far! I think it was less than $10 for a set of 10 or more tubes. My only frustration is that I run out of the white so much faster than the other colors. I can buy a single tube of white for $10+ (Plus, they keep it in a locked case, and there's never anyone around to open it.), or buy a whole new set for $10. So I'm probably going to end up with more gouache than I will ever need, just to get the whites.
