Ink on handmade paper

Hello - I have a client who wants calligraphy done on handmade paper from India. I have tried using several types of ink including gouache, but they all bleed on the paper. The ink also pills because of the fibers of the paper. Any solutions? Help would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same problem with a client who wants calligraphy done on paper from Thailand - very fluffy, cottony paper. I'm googling solutions and will post anything helpful here - good luck to you!

And if any readers can help, please let us know!

Okay - got some good answers from the lovely Laura Hooper-Leader and Maurelle on Instagram:

Krylon makes a workable fixative spray - apply a light coating to the paper (like hairspray - just a fine mist) let it dry. Repeat until the bleeding stops. Using gouache should help, as will adding some gum arabic to the ink.

Good luck!
